FOR MORE INFORMATION ON NATORI AND TO DONATE
One World, Many Voices for Japan was conceived and produced in response to the March 11, 2011 tsunami in Japan, by three poets in Santa Cruz, California. We live in an oceanside town subject to earthquake and tsunamis ourselves. With strong ties to Japan and knowing that we are all one world, we chose to reach across the planet to creatively express our support for the people of Japan, particularly in Natori City, which was completely devastated by the March tsunami. We invite you to join us for video and text of the poetry, music and dance from that extraordinary evening of May 20, 2011, which raised spirits and also funds on behalf of the people of Japan.
The evening was held at First Congregational Church, and included poets Kate Aver Avraham, Lea Haratani, Len Anderson, Linda Holiday, Joan Zimmerman, Peggy Heinrich, Dane Cervine and Carolyn Brigit Flynn, bamboo flute from Emily Bording, vocal music with Cheryl Anderson & the Cabrillo Youth Chorus, Japanese classical dance with Ikuyo Conant, chanting from the Santa Cruz Zen Center, and Vocal music & community singing with Coleen Douglas.
One World, Many Voices for Japan was cosponsored by the City of Santa Cruz Sister Cities Committee, Aikido of Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Sentinel, Aikido of Monterey, First Congregational Church, Watsonville Taiko, Santa Cruz Zen Center, Poetry Santa Cruz, and the Japanese Cultural Fair.
If you are moved by these offerings we urge you to offer donations and support to the people of Natori through the link below, who continued to move through a process to re-build that will take decades. Our efforts from across the world express to them that they are not alone.
